About this bench

The Wet Edge is an independent editorial journal on watercolour practice. It is written for the person who paints, alone or in a class, and who wants to understand a gesture before repeating it: which pigment granulates, which paper holds a wet wash, when an edge closes, what an afternoon sky asks of a value study, and how a studio keeps a class, hangs an exhibition and files an edition.

This desk is not a studio, not a school, not a gallery and not a shop. It sells nothing, takes no commission, teaches no paid class, ranks no artist and names no brand as a partner. Every standards body, manufacturer, museum and school named in an entry is described in the third person, and none of them publishes this site.

What an entry contains

Each entry takes exactly one question about the practice. The answer comes first, in the opening paragraphs, before any background. What follows is written so a reader can jump to the part they need: what the term means, what to measure, what is normal on the sheet, what is not.

The sources are named at the end of the entry. They are the published standards, the manufacturer literature on pigments and paper, the conservation guidance on mounting and light, and the museum catalogues. Where a source does not settle a question, the entry says so instead of guessing.

What this desk refuses

The desk does not sell paper, paint, brushes, prints or originals. It does not take bookings, does not run a paid course and does not accept a manufacturer as a sponsor. It does not claim any cultural or community authority: it describes a practice, and it speaks for no one but itself.

The name on the address

The domain name is an address, not a brand, and it is never used here as a signature or a service. This journal has no relationship with any person, business or organisation that may have used this domain name before.
