What does cold dry air do to a wash on the sheet?
Cold air holds less moisture than warm air. When that air moves, it strips water from the surface of the paper at a rate the studio never shows. A wash that stays open for ten minutes indoors can skin over in three or four outdoors. The paper itself also cools, and cold paper pulls heat from the wash, which slows pigment dispersion and leaves granulation sitting where it landed rather than floating into the next stroke. The result is a wash that looks settled before the painter has finished laying it.

The painter who wants a hard edge on all four sides has to work against the wind or turn the board. How do you keep a wash open in cold dry wind?
Three moves help. First, pre-wet the paper more than usual and let the sheet drink before the wash goes down. Second, work with a larger brush and fewer strokes, because every pass adds water the air will take. Third, keep the board flat or tilted away from the wind, so the wash does not run. Some painters add a drop of glycerin to the water, but that changes the drying time of the finished painting and is not a fix for a single session. The reliable fix is to shorten the distance between the water and the paper: load the brush, touch once, and leave it.
Why does the paper cool faster than the air?
Water evaporating from the sheet takes heat with it. The paper surface can sit several degrees below the air temperature while a wash is drying. That cooling slows the brush's own water and makes the next stroke feel colder and stiffer. On a stretched sheet, the cooling also tightens the paper, which changes the tooth under the brush. A painter who notices the sheet going cold under the hand knows the wash is already closing.
When should the wash be left alone?
The wash should be left alone the moment the surface stops reflecting light. A wet wash has a sheen. A drying wash goes matte at the edges first. Once the matte line reaches the middle, the wash has set and any further brushwork will lift pigment instead of moving it. In cold dry wind, that moment arrives early, and the painter who keeps working past it gets a muddy middle and a hard rim. The discipline is to stop, step back, and let the sheet finish what the air started.
How does altitude change the drying rate?
Higher ground means lower air pressure, and lower pressure means water leaves the paper faster still. A wash painted at sea level and the same wash painted at a thousand metres do not dry at the same speed. The difference is small over a single pass but adds up over a session. Painters who work outdoors in cold, dry, high country learn to mix a little more water than the studio recipe calls for and to plan fewer passes per wash.
What does this mean for a finished painting?
A wash dried in cold dry wind can look different from the same wash dried in a warm room. The pigment sits higher on the tooth, granulation is sharper, and the edges are harder. That is not a fault. It is a record of the air the painting was made in. The painter who understands the drying rate can use it: a hard windward edge and a soft leeward edge are a signature of the day, and they can be repeated on purpose once the painter knows which way the wind is blowing.
The practical rule is simple. Read the air before the first stroke. Pre-wet more, load more, touch less, and stop when the sheen goes. The wash will do the rest.
